Maha Shivratree

Maha Shivratree is celebrated in honour of Hindu God, Siva. Hindu devotees, clad in spotless white, carry the "kanwar" - wooden arches covered with flowers – on pilgrimage to Grand Bassin, to fetch holy water from the lake.

1. RUDRA MAHA YAJ.

  • Day & Date     : Sunday 19th February 2017

  • Venue             : Divine Musuem, Ganga Talao (Grand Bassin)                

The Rudra Maha Yaj is a collective religious ceremony conducted by several eminent “Acharyas”  with the participation of hundreds and hundreds of “yajman” coming from all over the Island of Mauritius.

Towards the end of end Rudra Maha Yaj ceremony water from River Ganga, India is poured in the Ganga Talao, thereny increasing its purity.

Many eminent personalities attend the Rudra Maha Yaj ceremony. For the year 2017 the Chief Guest will be the His Excellency Mr Paramasivum Pillay Vyapoory, G.O.S.K, Vice President of Republic of Mauritius 

 

2. OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY.

  • Day & Date     : Tuesday 21st February 2017
  • Time               :  18 00 hours
  • Venue             :  Divine Musuem, Ganga Talao (Grand Bassin)                

The Official Openoing Ceremony marks the official launching of the various activities organized during the Maha Shivaratree festival.

Many eminent personalities attend the Official Opening Ceremony. For the year 2017 the Chief Guest will be the Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius, The Hon Pravind Kumar JUGNAUTH

 

3. FREE FOOD DISTRIBUTION.

“Service to man is service to God”

The MSDTF is organizing a free food distribution at the Ganga Talao as follows:

  • Day & Date    : From Monday 20th February to Thursday 23rd February 2017
  • Time               : on a 24 hours basis
